# The Tech Check Feature Qualitative Researchers Are Calling "Crazy Amazing"

 Published October 22, 2026 3 minute read

Every qualitative researcher knows the feeling. Your participant joins the call, their camera won't turn on, their mic cuts out, and the whole online focus group sits there watching five minutes of troubleshooting eat into the session. You built the perfect discussion guide, recruited exactly the right people, and now you're spending your first ten minutes as tech support instead of a moderator.

It's the kind of thing that's just become an accepted cost of doing online interviews. Until we built our Tech Check feature to solve it. This seemingly small feature changes a lot about how a session actually runs. Here’s how.

### **What This Moderator Tool Actually Does**

Picture the lobby before a session starts: instead of admitting everyone into the room at once, the moderator can pull each person into a one-on-one Tech Check with a single click, apart from everyone else waiting. There, the moderator confirms the respondent's connection, checks their video and audio, and previews their speaker setup, all before that person enters the group.

The video verification step adds another layer, as you can set custom prompts to confirm you're talking to the right person before admitting them. Once everything checks out, the moderator brings them into the full session, and the rest of the group, still waiting in the lobby, never has to sit through someone else's tech trouble.

### **Why Qualitative Researchers Are Excited About Tech Check**

One of our clients got excited enough about this feature that she made her own video about it. Alisa, from Harvest Insights, came across Tech Check while setting up a session on Bello and decided it was worth showing off. She filmed a walkthrough herself, posted it to [Harvest Insights' company YouTube channel](https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=28c5f53ea41c688ac393b84679c568b9cf3506d530dd8901f7153e00d925a31aJmltdHM9MTc4OTYwMzIwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=0a7e6e41-37ac-62a7-28bc-795f3602634b&psq=harvest+insight+and+bello+feature+you+tube&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cueW91dHViZS5jb20vd2F0Y2g_dj1fUkoxckFHUFJRdw), and shared it, entirely on her own initiative.

Her reaction summed it up: "crazy amazing." That's not a line you hear often about qualitative research software, and it stuck with us. Tech issues derail online focus groups and in-depth interviews, frustrate respondents, and pile stress onto moderators. That's minutes of dead air you get back, and participants who never have to sit around waiting on one person's connection.

Seeing a client take the time to film and share something like that unprompted is exactly the reaction we're chasing with everything we build. Alisa put it simply: this is the kind of moderator tool researchers have been asking for, and it's a good feeling to see a platform actually listen and build it.

### **Why We Built Bello This Way**

Our founder Shamsu has been building qualitative research software since 2002, long before "online qual" was a phrase anyone used. That experience taught him one lesson again and again: the tech should stay invisible. The moment a participant has to think about their webcam or connection, they've stepped out of the conversation and into a troubleshooting session. As Shamsu puts it: when the tech works the way it should, the conversation flows the way it should too.

Tech Check is one result of that philosophy. Bello isn't Zoom with a different coat of paint, built for general meetings and stretched to fit research. It's built for qualitative research specifically, and features like this one come out of that difference.

As a result, moderators get to focus entirely on the conversation from the first minute. Every camera, mic, and connection is already confirmed before the session starts, so there's nothing competing for attention once it does.

### **How Can Bello Help?**

Bello takes the guesswork out of getting a project off the ground, so you can spend less time on setup and more time on the research itself. Tech Check is just one of our Pre-Meeting features that makes that possible; others include:

- Setting up single meetings or full series in one action
- Adding polls and custom agreements ahead of time
- Assigning participants via bulk import or booking link
- Scheduling reminders and nudges
- Exporting meeting links for an entire project in CSV format

This is the first post in a series on how Bello keeps the tech invisible at every stage of a project. Stay tuned for more on pre-meeting, during, and post-meeting features, and see how Bello supports you every step of the way.

If there's a specific feature you want covered sooner, let us know.

### **Quick Q&A**

**Q: Do participants need to download anything or use a specific device to complete a tech check?**

A: No downloads needed. Tech Check runs right in the browser and works on Chrome, Safari, and Edge across desktop and mobile, so focus group and in-depth interview participants can join from whatever device they're planning to use for the session.

**Q: Can I customize what the video verification step asks for?** A: Yes. The video verification prompts are yours to set, so you can tailor what you're confirming based on the study, whether that's just identity or something more specific to your project.

**Q: Is Tech Check built on top of Zoom or a similar meeting tool?**

A: No. Bello is its own platform, built specifically for qualitative research, so features like Tech Check come from what researchers actually need rather than being adapted from a general video call tool.

**Q: What else can I do to make sure a session starts smoothly?**

A: Tech Check handles the connection side, but there's more you can do before a session starts, from sending reminders to setting up your observer team.
